Kennedy does not have ALS (Advanced Learning Specialist) right now. All other schools have an ALS.

Again, here is the most up to date directory for you: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1epfuzXYBlWLsHZD6iWDWXvD_m5yQZhDc-9aE_-SukVA/edit#gid=0

51:02
Any questions you have can be posed in the chat! :)

51:14
The question is about WIN time (What I need)

51:27
What happens during that time for AL students?

53:30
Our middle schooler is in an advanced math class but it seems like all the other ALAC things are optional projects. How else are kids who are tagged for ALAC being engaged during the school day?

54:30
I have the same question as A. Bradshaw. How are kids being engaged during the school day

59:35
The feedback on Actively Learn is very minimal and my child has only used it 3x all year.

59:50
How and when are middle school students identified for online/hybrid opportunities through CESA 2?

01:00:13
I know our specialist just started at Huegel, but we haven’t heard anything yet about getting our third grader engaged in AL. She’s been tagged for a long time but hasn’t had an opportunity yet.

01:02:03
@Jessica identification is a triangulation of data (quantitative) and interventions/recommendations (family/teachers/ALS, qualitative).

01:03:30
@Adam I recommend filling out an inquiry form for Sue. She just started and would appreciate an update from you: https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/curriculum-instruction/advanced-learning/inquiry-form

01:03:38
Otherwise you can email her directly

01:04:29
Our son just started to work with our AL specialist 30 minutes a week on Beast Academy and it was only after we pushed for something all year. We provided outside assessments at the beginning of the year AND he's been going up a grade in math since kindergarten so we were disappointed it took so long for that intervention. It seems as though more time is spent on identifying students than working with those students who are already identified.

01:04:46
@Adam smnichols@madison.k12.wi.us

01:07:16
@Leslie I'm sorry to hear it has taken that long. I always recommend filling out a formal inquiry form for our ALS so that they know of your concerns.

01:07:28
What AL will be available for 9th grade in the core classes? The AP classes are electives for freshman

01:09:41
@John, we've been actively engaged with her since 2020 when his kindergarten teacher pushed for him to get assessed and we emailed with her at the beginning of the year. It just seems as though they have other priorities that are being pressed on them or believe that if kids aren't vocal about something, it's ok. Not all advanced learners will show signs at school of being bored or needing more interventions.

01:13:46
@Leslie I'd be happy to meet with you about this or even have Sharon you and I meet to discuss how we can better provide services in a timely manner.

01:17:59
Will you be discussing the possible move to Universal Honors tonight as described in this document?https://go.boarddocs.com/wi/mmsd/Board.nsf/files/CLQRW36F49EA/$file/IWG%2012.5.22.pdf

01:19:17
@Dan We do not plan to discuss Universal Honors, but I will bring it up to Dr. Alexander and we get a quick update

01:19:55
Would really like to know more about it, and would like to know how we can have input into any major changes to AL approaches in our district.

01:22:36
Would like to know if similar changes are being considered for AL in elementary / middle schools in MMSD.

01:23:59
@Sarah I believe your child will attend West. I'd recommend going to the parent night: West High School 8th Grade Family Night - Mon. Jan 30th, 2023 - 7:00-9:00 pm, West Auditorium (information about West, course selection, and electives)

01:29:34
I will go to the meeting. I would like to know what the plan is. What is the plan for 9th graders?

01:33:20
@Sarah, I would point you to Amanda Jamae, the ALS at Hamilton to help you with specific questions about next year.

01:38:59
I don’t have specific questions about my child. I was wondering what the AL options are for all 9th grade across all high schools in core subjects.

I al sorry, i have to drop off because putting my kids to bed. Please share the rest of the r cording. Thanks!

02:07:04
Thanks for sharing Evy!

02:08:44
@Sarah - I appreciate your question. I will bring it up to Dr. Alexander. We don't have an ALS at the HS level to support and coach core classes like we do K-8.

02:13:15
Dr. Alexander will be on for a bit after the meeting for questions

02:13:53
More repetition would help in learning. Helps develop mastery.

02:15:32
Honors affects all AL. AP is only electives not core classes for 9th grade

02:17:23
How are we moving forward with a universal honors plan when we don’t know what classes will earn credit for core classes?

02:19:07
Thank you

02:19:19
Thanks for joining everyone!
